Faslane protesters make a last standFaslane protesters make a last stand 30-Sep-2007 [Observer]
One of the longest demonstrations against Britain's nuclear arms policy comes to an end tomorrow, amid divided opinion over its success. Faslane 365 was intended to disrupt the nuclear submarine fleet by blockading the Faslane naval base, on the river Clyde, every day for a year. Thousands of protesters from the UK and abroad took it in turns to block the gates of the maximum-security defence establishment, in protest against the Trident missile programme.

Who's Side Are You On? 28-Sep-2007 [Big Stick and a Small Carrot]
The actions of this terrorist have turned the spotlight on liberals, libertarians and all those others opposed to the ever expanding power of the state. It is time for them to make a choice. Will they renounce their dangerous opposition to ID Cards and the National Database? Will they publicly support the rapid expansion of the government's entirely secure DNA database? Will they wholeheartedly and sincerely endorse the government's national children's database? (And will they also support the perfectly sensible exclusion for the children of the people who made it compulsory for everyone else's children to be included?)

I too laughed when I read about Jonathan Jones, the 79-year-old Broadgreen resident, receiving an 18th birthday message from North Swindon MP Michael Wills (SA, Sept 25). However, although Mr Jones finds it a great joke and a bit flattering, the irony of this won't be lost on people who recognise that these little errors will be an everyday occurrence for thousands of people when the National Identity Register and Identity Cards scheme starts to encroach on every aspect of their day-to-day lives.

Learning to live with Big Brother 27-Sep-2007 [The Economist]
These days, data about people's whereabouts, purchases, behaviour and personal lives are gathered, stored and shared on a scale that no dictator of the old school ever thought possible. Most of the time, there is nothing obviously malign about this. Governments say they need to gather data to ward off terrorism or protect public health; corporations say they do it to deliver goods and services more efficiently. But the ubiquity of electronic data-gathering and processing—and above all, its acceptance by the public—is still astonishing, even compared with a decade ago. Nor is it confined to one region or political system.

Ahmadinejad Is Not My Type 25-Sep-2007 [Big Stick and a Small Carrot]
For those who want to avoid another bloody war, there is a temptation to downplay the intolerant attitudes of the Iranian regime. With parts of the US government clearly looking to manufacture public support for military action against Iran (using the Iraq debacle as their model), any criticisms of the Iranian regime can seem to lend support to the bomber brigade's desire for war. It would be a mistake to minimise criticism of the Iranian regime for this reason. For a start, it would allow the war advocates to claim that those who oppose military action fully endorse the Iranian regime. Everyone who has ever been called a supporter of Saddam, and that will probably include just about everyone who opposed the invasion of Iraq, will know what I mean. It's a straw man but one which refuses to go away.

Our Values 20-Sep-2007 [Big Stick and a Small Carrot]
I do have a complaint when the government insists that it is absolutely committed to promoting democracy and opposing oppressive regimes and refuses to accept that selling powerful military equipment to a regime like the House of Saud flatly contradicts that assertion. The result is that the entire premise of the foreign policy debate as framed by the government is built on a myth. This is not only starkly hypocritical but it also effectively negates the ability of the people to meaningful debate foreign policy with the government.

These mercenaries are involved with more than just security duties, they are often involved in intelligence gathering too and are heavily armed. Of course it's dangerous work but there are obvious advantages to using mercenaries instead of regular forces. When they get killed or injured there is less media coverage and they are not included in coalition forces casualty figures. Also, up until now, there has been little scrutiny of their behaviour which has often been as atrocious as that of the regular army.

These assurances can be tested by asking them if they will give assurance such that any recorded breach of the database will resolve in them resigning. If they cannot give that assurance then they are aware that the system cannot be 100 per cent secure.

Here is just one point which was picked up by myself and several other CiFers. Mongomerie, referring to General Patraeus's testimony, wrote this:

He presented independently verified data that showed a significant reduction in fatalities - particularly in Baghdad.

Independently verified data? Really? I must have missed that. What link does Tim use to substantiate this claim? A link to an NGO perhaps? No, it's a link to the slides produced by the Pentagon to accompany the general's statement. Not hugely independent then.

10:30, got to Bank station for the Critical Mass to DSEI. We left at about 11:00AM with maybe 30 to 40 people. There was a sound system at the front, and one at the back. We went via Whitechapel, Comercial road, The Isle of Dog and Canning Town all the way to Custom House. The outreach on the mass was pretty good - I was at the back most of the time, so I could see all the bystanders looking at us, impressed by the sound systems, with anti-DSEI leaflets in their hands. This happened on quite a few streets where there was many bystanders who are not used to seeing critical mass cycle past them !

Little by little, more and more of Palestine is being “wiped off the map” - houses bulldozed by the occupiers. Bulldozers surmounted with guns. But what about fair play? Surely a football match must be the best place to appeal to the public against this inhuman treatment of our fellow man. This is what prompted a few of Bristol’s OAP’s to join the two hour demonstration at London’s Wembley Park Stadium on Saturday 8th September 2007, when Israel played against England in a qualifier match.

The UK government is currently arresting and detaining Iraqi Kurdish asylum seekers. The UK Government has forcibly deported 89 Iraqi Kurdish asylum seekers on 4 different occasions over the last 3 years. The first 3 forcible deportations were carried out by military aircraft from Brize Norton, a military airbase near Oxford. The last deportation was by a so-called humanitarian plane from London on 5 September 2007. The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees however fears more deportations are planned back to Iraqi Kurdistan, given the increasing numbers of Iraqi Kurds being arrested and held in detention centers all over the UK.

This idea of a database State cannot address this issue, in fact it can only make it far easier for people to lie, due to the phenomenal amount of information generated in the gather phase for the database creation. In essence the lies become buried under a mountain of truth. It is also widely acknowledged that a more significant danger is the inevitable increase of crime when this database is compromised.

Change afoot in UK arms exports 10-Sep-2007 [Financial Times]
One of the world’s biggest arms fairs opens in London on Tuesday amid signs that Gordon Brown, prime minister, wants to change the way Britain sells arms abroad and as the show’s organiser tries to offload the business. The four-day exhibition in the city’s Docklands, the fifth biennial arms fair, is described by Reed Elsevier, the organisers, as the fastest-growing defence show in the world. Some exhibitors go further, saying the 1,300 companies from more than 30 countries at the show make it the largest defence exhibition in Europe. But arms fairs are a sensitive business. Reed Elsevier said in June that putting them on was no longer compatible with its publishing business.

The irony is that Patraeus does understand how difficult the situation is, unlike "sweets and flowers" Wolfowitz, "last throes" Cheney or any of the previous body count military men who failed so miserably. Patraeus genuinely does seem to understand that traditional military methods will not work, that winning the support of the local population is crucial and he even understands some of what that entails. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if Patraeus had been listened too from the start, and I mean from at least a year before the invasion, there's a chance that the last four and a half years could have been very different.

Syria is the only country, other than Jordan, that was allowing people in without a visa. The Jordanians are being horrible with refugees. Families risk being turned back at the Jordanian border, or denied entry at Amman Airport. It’s too high a risk for most families. We waited for hours, in spite of the fact that the driver we were with had ‘connections’, which meant he’d been to Syria and back so many times, he knew all the right people to bribe for a safe passage through the borders. I sat nervously at the border. The tears had stopped about an hour after we’d left Baghdad. Just seeing the dirty streets, the ruins of buildings and houses, the smoke-filled horizon all helped me realize how fortunate I was to have a chance for something safer.

Scandal of our secret casualties 03-Sep-2007 [Daily Express]
According to the most recent statistics from the Ministry of Defence, 546 troops were admitted to field hospitals up to August 15. In the whole of last year the total was 240. In the first two weeks of August alone, 35 soldiers were injured – 14 per cent of the total figure for 2006.
...
But the official injury figures are likely to be just a fraction of the real total, a Royal Marine has told the Daily Express.
...
The Marine – who refused to be named for fear of repercussions – claimed that every transport plane returning from Afghanistan and Iraq was packed with injured personnel. He said that on their way to RAF Brize Norton or RAF Lyneham, they first touch down at East Midlands airport where fleets of ambulances are lined up to take the wounded to Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham. And he said that while troops are “hammering” the Taliban, there were unacceptable levels of casualties from the UK. “You only hear about the guys killed in action,” he added. “The figures for the seriously wounded are being massaged like crazy. Most of these guys have had limbs blown off, or their lower limbs shattered by anti-personnel weapons. “Their treatment and aftercare is dreadful.”
